Communicate with the Chung King Jungle - Why So Serious ?!

As it was necessary to interview a few persons in Chung King Mansion, we gave some thought about the question we were going to ask them. While we wanted to learn more about their cultural and linguistic background, we were afraid that asking them directly would scare off many potential interviewees. So we came up with this subtle question, which seemed innocent, but would tell us more about their backgrounds as well as the influence of English in their daily life: What is your favourite song?

1. 2.
3. 4.
5.

The songs:

  1. Kumar Sanu - Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye
  2. Eason - Shall We Talk
  3. Clouseau - Zie me graag
  4. Bryan Adams - Straight From The Heart
  5. P-Square - Do Me

The results were indeed astonishing. All of our lucky interviewees turned out to originate from a different country (India, Hong Kong, Belgium, the Philippines and Nigeria). Besides the shop owner, all of them were just visiting Chung King Mansions for business, sight-seeing or just for fun with friends. So most of the people in Chung King Mansions were just passing-by, not planning to stay there for a long time. Unexpectedly, it turned out that nearly everyone loved their own local songs the most, only one girl preferred an English song from a Canadian singer although she was a Filipina. A number of the songs are completely sung in their native language, but several have distinct English influences. The African song is by far the most remarkable, as it is practically impossible to distinguish the English and African words in the song.
