The Lower Central

Daytime Central - City Walker
Central is a different region towards the others. Daytime Central business area is the busiest place (right after New York) in the world. Undoubtedly, here lies some of the most important business cores in Hong Kong. The International Finance Centre, situated at the Harbor side, is where the Hong Kong Monetary Authority located. The people there care one thing in common, that is time.

The Chinese say time is money. That is why roads are never empty in Central. They are always occupied by neither the heavy transport nor the ceaseless flocks of pedestrians. If you happen to stop for a traffic light, no matter where they are heading, you would always hear
“bup…bup….bup”. Traffic congestion is causing lack of tolerance here. Oh, believe me, the general population of Hong Kong will not always shares this intolerance attitude.

Another characteristic of daytime Central is the sound. The main noise comes from the heavy traffic. But on a typical Sunday, Tagalog (native language of the Philippines) takes over the air and makes other noises meaningless. But in a normal business day, people talks quite formal in Central, considering most of them are businessmen.

Pedestrians are usually in a hurry. Instead of strolling with in ‘andante’ on the street, they are walking in ‘allegro’. Slipping and tripping are the inevitable consequences in this crowded condition, especially when talking on mobile phones, chatting with partners, listening to iPods.

The Upper Central

Daytime Central - City Walker
Central does not only make up of prosperity, it has another side. By going to the upper Central, lifestyle changes gradually.

In the residential area of Central, the peaceful lifestyle there would make visitors think they have been to another district. The locals and foreigners are free to chat with each other. In a sunny afternoon, people could share their feeling while having a cup of tea in a café. That is the leisure life in Central.

It is not uncommon that a child is accompanied by a maid because their parents are busy engaging at work. What really shocked us was we found one elderly working in the streets, not in the economic field. She collected cardboards and waste papers to make a living. In a well-off district like this, this elderly reminds us helping the needy people is important, even in Central.

By walking upstairs, lifestyles are more relaxed and peaceful. Instead of streets packed with pedestrians, in here we found antique buildings, priceless old trees add color to the streets. We could have a pleasant stroll here, enjoying the older part of Central.
What an amazing scene!

There is a totally different style in the upper part of Central. With no busy business, no crowded markets, no disturbing noises.

The night time Lan Kwai Fong, being recognized by the world.
How about the day time? Crowed with People? No. Although the bars and restaurant have opened, they are not serving customers. Meanwhile, they are busy preparing business after the sun set. Lan Kwai Fong is a place with distinguished day and night living style.

By walking from the lower part to the upper part of Central, lifestyles are totally different. From bustling to leisure, crowded to empty, noisy to quiet, anyone can experience Central’s uniqueness in a few steps.
