Is Culture Diversity or Globalization? - Why So Serious ?!

These people we interviewed were just passing by Chung King Mansions as well as Hong Kong. They came here to make a living, to visit friends or just for traveling. The dialogues in unknown languages by these passers-by created a secured atmosphere contradictory to our insecure feelings. As we observed, English was the most convenient way to communicate in the area. The banners, the signs and the rough advertisements written in English as well as the people speaking English or other native languages made the mansions a lively global village!

While most people were still developing more advanced transportation methods and communication systems to globalize the world, Hong Kong – a free port labeled in 1900s - was already bringing people together from all corners of the world. Internationalization as one of the accepted characteristics of postindustrialism and postmodernity being exaggerated in Hong Kong is central to the lives of hong Kong people. (as cited in the article Under the Volcano: Postmodern Space in Hong Kong by Alexander Cuthbert) In fact, Some of the ethnic minorities have moved to Hong Kong and have been living in Hong Kong for decades. Many young residents in Chung King Mansions were born in Hong Kong!CKM

This chubby youngster (image on right hand side) who was a Cantonese speaker showed off his sweet smile when Paul Fan, an avocational photographer in Hong Kong, said they both belong to Hong Kong. (as cited in the blog entry by Paul Fan July 26, 2008) How little do we know about them in terms of culture and language is hard to estimate. The population of Hong Kong does not only consist of Chinese, but also those from India, Africa, South East Asia or other regions over the globe. Mutual respect is a good way to get on with each other. Under the influence of globalization, the population's mobility will be higher in the future. We will get more opportunities to confront various people. Therefore, we should respect and listen to what others do and say respectively in order to make Hong Kong a world city of culture diversity as well as an example of globalization. Last but not least, all of us should bear in mind that Cantonese is spoken by most of the population in Hong Kong, including the Chinese and non-Chinese!
