It's time to talk about reading and writing in LKF. They were also amazing and interesting.
Having listened to many different languages, reading and writing were diversifying. I saw many advertisements and leaflets written in different languages. I thought that language use in Lan Kwai Fong was various so as to satisfy different visitors. Take restaurants as an example. There were many different kinds of restaurants and bars such as Brazilian, Japanese, Pakistani and also Thai. Each restaurant or bar had signboards, banners and posters to promote their food and beverage. All restaurants wanted to be special and outstanding. That was why they used varied and different languages .This enriched the written language in Lan Kwai Fong.
In terms of the writing in Lan Kwai Fong, advertisement boards must be the first thing we discussed. When I was in Lan Kwai Fong, I could easily be attracted by large and shining boards. The names of restaurants or bars were significant as they wanted to draw customers’ attention. The writing on boards gived customers a first impression.
In general, language use on advertisement boards depended on what kind of food those restaurants wanted to sell. Let me explain in this way. If a restaurant sells French food, a French name is required. It is because it wants and has to be special and easily distinguished by visitors. Visitors will eventually think it is a French restaurant by seeing French characters.
Due to the variety, shops in Lan Kwai Fong had a really funny scene, which was – many different characters were used in advertisement boards on the lane. Moreover, the menu of each restaurant or bar was unique. When I ordered food, the menu was at least written in two languages. Actually, in order to match the restaurant’s or bar’s style, they used different languages to present their own products.
Take a Japanese restaurant ‘TYOTO” as an example. They used Japanese as their presentation language. For example, “sashimi” and “sushi” are Japanese characters. Now, not only Japanese know their meaning, but also Hong Kongers and foreigners. Non-Japanese were supposed to be incapable of reading Japanese words. However, when they saw such characters, they would eventually understand. I could see a multicultural exchange in LKF. Different languages could be understood by different people. I was curious at that time. There were so many languages that I got confused.
I could read English and other languages in the same menu. It was interesting to me. But when it comes to profitable business, all restaurants had to down-to-earth and took care of the needs of different people .Put down English in menu. In this case, I realized why languages written in Lan Kwai Fong were varied.
There were several walls painted with bright colours and strange words. I found it hard to ignore them. Actually, they were called "Graffiti".
“Graffiti is sometimes regarded as a form of art and other times regarded as unsightly damage or unwanted. Some people think of it as art, others vandalism, and others, a culture of its own.”(Quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graffiti) As it explains, graffiti is usually a part of teenage culture. Teenagers draw graffiti in public areas to express their dissatisfaction or any other feelings. So, graffiti is always found in public estates or playgrounds where teenagers usually go.
Graffiti is somehow not appreicated by as many people as I thought. Although words were well-decorated and painted with bright colors, people found graffiti annoying because graffiti polluted walls.
Instead of writing in a formal way, flysheets enriched written language or reading in Lan Kwai Fong as well as they were quite different from any other places in Hong Kong.
Chinese is an official language in Hong Kong as most of the residents in Hong Kong are Chinese. However, when I stepped into Lan Kwai Fong, I got freaked out that the situation there was totally different. For example, flysheets were mostly written in English which meant the target audience was foreigners, but not Chinese. So, the street of LKF is a foreign lane alike with so many flysheets written in English.
It was so exciting that reading and writing in LKF appealed to me a lot. I was totally attracted by it.
