When we arrived at Tsim Sha Tsui, what first came to our minds was the district's remarkable landmarks: the Chungking Mansions, the Peninsula Hotel and the Clock Tower. The Chungking Mansions are a popular spot where backpackers could find cheap accommodations. The place's diverse cultural aspects were recognized by the TIME Magazine as the ‘Best Example of Globalization in Action’ (Fitzpatrick, n.d.). Interestingly, Hong Kong citizens tend to label Chungking Mansions as a dangerous and unpopular place due to the shabby décor and the ethnic population. After our visit to Chungking Mansions, the negative feelings and doubts we had simply broke.

We ventured into the Chungking Mansions. We came across a large variety of commercial establishments in the building. For instance, as we walked along the corridors, we saw a number of money exchangers and local retailers selling different kinds of goods. For example, exotic clothing and snacks like the Indian patty. We found that goods were priced reasonably and we could enjoy the Indian patty only at HKD $7. However, the Indian patty might be a little bit stodgy for some Hongkongers, do think before you decide to have a try!

Other than imported traditional items, we also found shops selling trendy goods. There were many trendy accessories and also traditional Chinese jewellry inside the grocery stores, where we could hardly find in other places. Some of us were music-lovers. We jumped into the CD stores and found some latest Indian albums on sale. At the other side of the corridor, we saw some nice electrical appliances stores and they were having some special offers for visitors.

Taking a visit around the Chungking Mansions provided us opportunities to investigate its multiculturalism. Luckily, we were able to conduct an interview with the 5 passers-by about their impressions on Tsim Sha Tsui. Out of the 5, 4 of them were foreign visitors, coming from different countries. Undoubtedly, they were contributors to the diverse culture in the Chungking Mansions and made Tsim Sha Tsui the most unique tourist spot in Hong Kong.

As a result, this reassured Chungking Mansions’ position as the ‘Best Example of Globalization in Action’
(Fitzpatrick, n.d.).
