Hi there ! We hope you have already finished reading the three articles before getting here.

We know many of you are curious about the reason why we describe our selected area - Wan Chai Market and the streets around from three different perspectives instead of doing so by compiling a tour-guide like project. In fact, making it tour-guide like was our initial plan. However, as what is mentioned on the cover page, soon we found it impossible.

The language density there is so high and the language use is so diverse that we cannot define its Langscape. Is it a typical district where English meets Chinese? Yes, it can be. Is there any location where only Chinese is employed ? Yes, plenty. Any other language used within the area? Yes, several. You can say the area is multilingual but there is also a co-existing monolingualism. You can say English is prevalent there but Cantonese, Putonghua, Thai and many other languages seem no less popular. So, as you can see here no matter how we describe and analyse the Langscape of the area, it never gets irrational. "What is the best way to present and emphasize such a unique characteristic to readers?" we discussed, and came up with this plan.

According to Jess K. Alberts (2007), a communication researcher, people selectively perceive what they want to perceive.(P.89) In other words, it is sure that everyone will see a Langscape that is totally different from others' when they stroll into our selected area. So, we fabricated 3 authors with strong personalities - The Red Patriot, who hates foreign languages and keeps praising the use of Chinese in the area. The Purple Swellhead, who thinks English is superior to everything and is delighted by the area's bilingualism. And last, The White traveller, who is very open-minded and is amused by the language diversity. As we write up 3 different articles in accordance with their personalities, the unique characteristic of the Langscape of Wan Chai Market and the streets around can be presented to the readers.

We understand due to our way of presenting, some may doubt the credibility of our project so we have to clarify here that though the authors and their personalities are made-up, the descriptions and the interviews we included in the articles are genuine information obtained from the fieldwork and reference sources.
