Graffiti is regarded as a way of expression in the society. People who draw graffiti are mostly youngsters who have little say in the society. They use the wall as an emotional expression and it could also be seen as an action for attention-seeking, just like the black who was interviewed said he likes to draw on graffiti on train. This is because passengers and people could easily spot his "masterpiece".

Actually. i don't understand why do you think painting graffiti is childish and selfish~ if you recognise graffiti is a form of act~ making graffiti become a form of art can help to input artistic elements to Hong Kong And it can help to boost the economy of hong kong when different style of graffiti are adopted by mass culture for commercial purposes.

For me, whether graffiti is artistic or vandalism also depends on the content of it. Graffiti is posted on walls of the public area. It is unacceptable that artists using foul language in their productions. It is an eyesore for everyone and totally affects the beauty of the city. But I do appreciate those amazing graphics with positive message.

What do you think of the multimodal ways of 'reading' HK? Which comics do you like? Which comics would you like to read in English? Where does one have to go to see graffiti? What are your thoughts on this subject? Do you agree with David Gunn that 'The graffiti was a symbol of the collapse of the system'? I am writing to response to the paragraphs which describe the sound of Hong Kong. Personally I agreed with them at most of the parts. The most interesting one is about "TV". Personally I don't watch TV at most of the time because I prefer Internet, but I find my grandmother really loves to switch on her TV all the time at an unbearable loud noise.

I extremely hate some noise sounded when I am concentrating on things. For example, it can make me anger if somebody watching TV with high volume when I am studying at home. Also in library, I wise I am able to kill guys who are talking. These are my experiences of sound in Hong Kong. Does anyone have the same feeling?

What is YOUR image of HK? Did you share any similar thoughts with the writers/artists' perceptions? Maybe you share similar thoughts with the real estate developers/advertisers? What we have discussed today only constitute a certain perspective of seeing HK and we love to hear what you see in HK!

Actually HK is a multi-cultural city in which people in different races can easily found around is. It represents one of the Chinese virtues -- compatible. It's really nice that people with different cultures can live together with no conflicts.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon in Essen, Germany. It was our first day there and we strolled around the town square. I felt like I was the only Chinese in town. I was surrounded by German – the people and the language. The sound of German was very unfamiliar. Fortunately there was a music festival, Essen Original, during the weekend. We stopped by and listened to the music, I was surprised! I was listening to Goth/punk rock music sang in English. When I turned around and looked again, I found myself surrounded by Goths of all ages, all in black. I now felt at home...
It is true that the sounds of a place can definitely give a place its personality. I probably would not have remember Essen if not for the Goth music (and fashion). It could have been another German city. But the sound I heard on that day gave me a reason to go back (if there is another Goth concert!).
How do you find the 'sounds' of Hong Kong?

The topic of Hearing Hong Kong is quite interesting. We are all raised in Hong Kong and we are familiar with our surroundings. Therefore, whenever we hear some sounds, we can immediately recognize where they come from. By studying this topic, we not only know more about the unique culture of Hong Kong, but also learn how to describe the surrounding sounds more skillfully by text.

I think whether people think graffiti is an art or vandalism also depends on the content of the graffiti. For example, some graffitis are very outstanding in artistic aspects and express unique opinions while some others look chaotic and often use those Fxxx words. In my opinion, the former one can be called art while the later one is meaningless.

Street art gives me a unsafe feeling and I avoid to go through those streets. Some graffities are excellent but it is a shame to clean them. Some have a very strong meaning. I consider them as a kind of art. But because graffiti is illegal, we have to clean it. Another question: if they do it on a big paper, should we call it graffiti yet?

The biggest "hongkongness" I saw from the video was the fact described by the artist that "people just oppose to anything new." I think it is pretty much related to our education which stresses that we should shut up, sit down and work.
It reminds me of an online article that Hong Kong is a city lacking Rock and Roll, since people here never yell for themselves. It seems true.

Whether Graffiti is art, in my point of view,it depends on which culture we adopt. Undeniably, Graffiti has existed since ancient times that we cannot ignore its value throughout history. However, if such kind of vent only brings about uncontrollable situation to society, should we keep it? We need to weigh the cost and benefit before letting graffiti become a common art for a society.

I'm writing in response to the song "Hong Kong" from Gorillaz. As a Hongkonger, I don't think it represents Hong Kong. On the other hand, I think it's something of the mainland China due to the fact that nowadays Hongkongers seldom listen to old chinese songs.
